Description Of Instrument
In its current incarnation the Samchillian consists of a modified ergonomic keyboard which straps around the performer's waist and is played while standing. The keyboard then triggers custom software, which in turn sends MIDI to a sound source.
The core idea is that keypresses denote changes of pitch, rather than fixed pitches. The performer then is able to play the exact same sequence of keys no matter what key signature he or she is in, which greatly simplifies fingering patterns. With such an arrangement it is possible to create unusual and very rapid improvisational flurries. For further information on the Samchillian visit http://www.samchillian.com/aboutsam.html
Stephanie Horst is a graduate student studying journalism at Boston University. She received a B.S. in communications from Ithaca College and moved to New York City immediately after graduation to pursue a career in publishing. A self-proclaimed magazine junkie, Stephanie held marketing positions at publications such as Women's Wear Daily, Billboard Magazine and Variety and worked closely with each publication’s design team on various marketing projects. While at Billboard she also wrote music reviews for chart-topping artist singles and has written and reported for Variety, a trade publication for the entertainment industry. In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys listening to old records, searching for treasures at local thrift stores and sifting through her never-ending stack of magazines. For the sake of her apartment, she hopes to one day own an iPad.
(Translated by Anna Rumbold)
Matti Kovler’s music has been praised for its “emotive potency” (New York Times), "bold orchestral colors” (The Boston Globe) and described as “part mystical, part comical” (Grade A Entrepreneurs). Recent projects included a Carnegie Hall commission—a monodrama for soprano and chamber ensemble; the work, Here Comes Messiah!, was premiered at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall in 2009.
Called by Steve Smith of the New York Times “a potentially estimable operatic composer in the making,” Matti wrote his first opera at the age of 17. His works have since been performed in Jerusalem, Amsterdam, Boston, Oslo and New York, by the Metropole Orchestra (Holland), Fox Studios Orchestra (Los Angeles), the Ariel Quartet (Boston) and the Brillaner Duo (Berlin). Kovler’s musical influences include Jewish folklore, “third stream” improvisation, a deep fascination with Janacek and Bartok polymodality, and the cult writings of the French theatre philosopher Antonin Artaud.
Born in Moscow and raised in Israel, Matti is a recipient of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarship for study in the US—he is now pursuing his doctoral work at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Among other recognitions are fellowships at the Tanglewood and the Aspen Music Festivals, the Theodore Presser Award and the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Award.

As a graduate student at Boston University, Melissa Levanti is furthering her journalistic experience by pursuing her passion for Fashion Journalism. In college, Melissa majored in graphic design and writing and spent a lot of time studying art and art history. According to Ms Levanti, "Graphic Design is a form of expression—of portraying a personality without words. My dream is to work at a major fashion publication, but I will always love graphic design and art."

The Size of One Leaf
Forests and parks offer us an emotional connection to the Earth. City life surrounds and dominates us. This limits our perspective and results in a swing between the contradictory senses of arrogance of power and poverty of dignity. The organic and democratic essence of forests and parks, these slices of heaven, has unique balancing effects.
As a graphic designer with interest in poetry, I intertwine the two. Poets have long documented our connection to nature. Poetry depicts the significance, emotional impact, and symbolic, metaphoric role of forests and parks, in our lives and our universe.
The humanist impact of forests and parks makes them a solace as well as a pleasure ground. With their democratic nature, rich and poor coexist. Forests and parks have also been a refuge.

Title: "We Will Never Die (1943): A Pageant to Save the Jews of Europe"
Describes the genesis and fate of We Will Never Die, a large-scale touring propaganda “pageant” created in 1943 by Hollywood screenwriter Ben Hecht, Broadway composer Kurt Weill and Zionist activist Peter Bergson. The goal of this theatrical enterprise was to bring word to the largely uninformed American public of the Nazi genocide of Jews then taking place in Europe (a story that was not well-reported in the mainstream news media of the day), and to secure funding for an independent Jewish army to take up arms against the Germans. The presentation draws on archival photographs, newsreel footage and a rare broadcast recording of the pageant's celebrity-filled final performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
